About the position

The Academic Teacher position at Windham School District involves providing quality education to incarcerated students while supervising classroom activities. The role requires adherence to the district's curriculum and participation in staff development programs, faculty meetings, and evaluations as mandated by the Texas Education Agency. The teacher will create a positive learning environment, manage student behavior, and maintain accurate records of student progress.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and direct learning activities of adult incarcerated students.
  • Follow the Windham School District (WSD) curriculum guide(s) for area of assignment.
  • Participate in district staff development programs as required.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings.
  • Participate in all evaluations and self-studies as required by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and contracting agency.
  • Serve on curriculum, textbooks and other committees as assigned.
  • Maintain lesson plans in accordance with the criteria established by WSD policy.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records in the manner prescribed by WSD.
  • Submit reports as required by program needs and administrative requests.
  • Give clear oral and written instructions to students.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom that is firm, fair, and consistent in applying classroom rules.
  • Create a positive classroom environment conducive to learning and educational growth of the students.
  • Prepare and use various methods to teach basic concepts for subject level.
  • Plan activities for individual student needs and engage and maintain the interest of students in instructional activity.
  • Administer diagnostic placement tests, achievement tests, curriculum tests and other tests as required by the principal.
  • Arrange seating, materials, and displays in such a manner as to harmonize with instructional aims and procedures.
  • Keep informed of and comply with all policies and procedures pertinent to the use of instructional materials, equipment, and textbooks.
  • Follow all unit procedures in checking out materials, supplies, and equipment and promptly report any defective equipment and/or student abuse of materials, supplies, or equipment.
  • Apply knowledge, training, and appropriate media in a systems approach to instruction as outlined in curriculum guides.
  • Keep informed of and comply with policies of the WSD and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
  • Maintain Student Progress Records cards as directed by WSD policies and procedures.
  • Follow statutory and agency regulations.
  • Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives, methods, and policy according to WSD requirements.
  • Demonstrate progress in meeting student performance targets of the district.
  • Demonstrate progress in meeting assigned action plans of the district or campus improvement plans.
  • Develop, use, and evaluate ideas and/or innovative approaches to improve performance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Must meet State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) requirements for area of assignment.
  • Elementary or Secondary level certification in a foundation subject area.
  • Minimum age: 21.
  • Valid Texas Driver license preferred (travel to job site).
  • Must pass Drug screen and Background Check.
