About the position

The Academic & Transfer Counselor at Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) plays a crucial role in providing holistic support to students enrolled in the School of Health & Patient Simulation (SHPS) programs. This position focuses on advising students on course registration, graduation requirements, and career pathways, ensuring they receive individualized and proactive academic and transfer counseling. The counselor collaborates with various departments and engages in outreach initiatives to promote student success and retention.

Responsibilities

  • Advising and providing holistic support for an assigned caseload of students, including course registration and graduation requirements.
  • Guiding students in major and career pathway exploration to clarify their interests and academic goals.
  • Sharing information on college programs, student support services, and financial assistance.
  • Engaging in proactive communication and outreach to students, addressing early alerts and offering referrals to resources.
  • Serving as a liaison to faculty and staff in the School of Health and Patient Simulation to relay current program requirements and career pathways.
  • Maintaining files and records of assigned caseload to track enrollment, retention, and graduation/transfer.
  • Participating in enrollment service events and initiatives to promote college-wide systems and processes.
  • Assisting enrollment services during peak registration periods with advising and registration support.
  • Working cross-functionally with other teams and participating in department and college-wide meetings and professional development opportunities.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Health Care, or closely related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in college admissions, academic advising, career development, or program/project management.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to assess complex situations.
  • Ability to build rapport and maintain collaborative relationships with students and colleagues.
  • Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, time-management, and organizational skills.
  • Experience providing advising/coaching in an educational setting.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to FERPA regulations.
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups, including underrepresented or underserved populations.
  • Team-oriented and detail-oriented with a commitment to excellent customer service.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Student Affairs or related field
  • Experience with Ellucian Student Information Systems
  • Experience working in a community college
  • Bilingual or Bicultural (Spanish and English)
  • Experience supporting a culturally diverse population in a Hispanic-Serving Institution.
