About The Position

The Accelerator Technical Specialist at Argonne National Laboratory will be responsible for the installation and maintenance of mechanical systems within the Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator System (ATLAS). This role involves troubleshooting accelerator diagnostic devices and supporting utilities, while ensuring proper documentation and maintenance of equipment to facilitate accelerator operations. The ideal candidate will be a flexible, results-oriented problem-solver who can manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • Proficiency with the safe use and best practices of hand-held power tools and hand tools
  • Proficiency with the fabrication of parts using basic shop tools and drawings
  • Proficiency in general mechanical assembly
  • Experience logging and documenting system maintenance, performance, and modifications
  • Ability to work independently following verbal or written instructions
  • Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to use multi-meters and other basic electrical measuring tools
  • Familiarity with relay logic, interlock systems, or basic computer code
  • Experience with programmable logic controllers
  • Familiarity with electrical schematics and mechanical drawings
  • Understanding of basic vacuum principles and best practices
  • Experience with alignment equipment
  • Experience with Computer Aided Drafting and Dimensioning software
  • Experience at an accelerator facility

Responsibilities

  • Installation and maintenance of beamline mechanical systems
  • Troubleshooting of accelerator diagnostic devices such as Faraday cups and wire scanners
  • Support for water and electric utilities
  • Maintaining and documenting equipment in support of ATLAS accelerator operations
