About the position

The Access, Metadata & Operations Coordinator at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will oversee a variety of library functions, focusing on access, metadata, and operations within a large academic law library. This role involves managing daily operations, ensuring quality patron service, and implementing best practices in library functions. The coordinator will also engage in strategic planning, staff leadership, and collaboration with various stakeholders to enhance library services and resources.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver strategic direction to staff teams in access, circulation, cataloging, metadata, operations, and serials.
  • Develop and lead implementation of best practices and standards relating to access, circulation, cataloging, metadata, and library operations functions.
  • Direct quality control to ensure consistency in patron service interactions.
  • Plan and lead library physical collection organization, shifting, and maintenance.
  • Coordinate and supervise the Cataloging unit's daily operations, including original cataloging, copy cataloging, and batch processing of electronic resources.
  • Manage the development and implementation of metadata strategies that support the discovery of electronic collections.
  • Lead the unit to investigate and implement new approaches for creating and manipulating bibliographic data, including the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI).
  • Provide reference services and library orientations to students, staff, and patrons.
  • Teach instructional workshops and provide technical support for information resources.
  • Conduct inventory functions and share updated information with library faculty and administration.
  • Provide intellectual leadership in the development of emerging cataloging standards and maintain currency with bibliographic and authority control issues.
  • Coordinate with administration to draft and implement emergency plans.
  • Innovate to improve findability and navigability in the Law Library.
  • Design and maintain faculty scholarship databases and track faculty publications.
  • Compile and interpret library use statistics for reports to the Provost and research library organizations.
  • Liaise with the University Library to assess and respond to needs related to circulation and interlibrary loan.
  • Liaise with various entities to plan and execute digitization projects for the law library.
  • Work with systems staff to configure circulation functions of the integrated library system.
  • Represent the Law Library through committees with local, regional, and national partners.
  • Be on call for evening and weekend shifts to provide direction in emergencies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A combination of four years of work experience in a library or equivalent setting, or college coursework equivalent to four years.
  • Two years of work experience in a library or equivalent setting performing progressively more responsible work.

Nice-to-haves

  • ALA-accredited master's degree in Library and/or Information Science (or equivalent).
  • Two or more years of experience in an academic law library setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare reports and generate documents using Microsoft Excel, Word, or similar productivity software.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with others in a team environment.
