About the position

The Accessories Craftsperson at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is responsible for creating, maintaining, and customizing 18th-century accessories for interpreters in historical dress. This role involves collaboration with the Historical Clothing & Dress Team to ensure accuracy and quality in the production of accessories, utilizing various crafting techniques and materials. The position emphasizes historical accuracy and requires adherence to safety protocols when handling chemicals and materials.

Responsibilities

  • Create accessories following provided research and construction methods established by the Manager of Historical Clothing & Dress.
  • Maintain and repair accessories to achieve an acceptable lifespan for the garment.
  • Responsible for meeting production timelines and conducting self-quality checks.
  • Serve as a liaison between customers, other HA Operations units, and vendors.
  • Follow instructions, safety protocols, and procedures when handling dye chemicals, hat sizing, and cleaning chemicals.
  • Consult with Department Supervisor and HC&D Manager about finishing techniques for 18th-century-style garments.
  • Communicate any complications, accessory issues, or garment construction problems with the Accessories Supervisor.
  • Collaborate with other Accessories Team members and departments.
  • Learn and train with new techniques and methods as necessary.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years of professional experience in craft, accessories, or theater industries.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work/life experience.
  • Portfolio showcasing accessories skills in production and design.

Nice-to-haves

  • 3-5 years professional experience.
  • Interest in 18th-century clothing and accessories.
  • Factory accessories production experience.
  • Factory sewing experience.
  • Additional fiber arts-related experience such as lacemaking, spinning, dyeing (natural and chemical), weaving.
