About the position

The Account Executive/Underwriter for Small Commercial at Travelers Insurance is a pivotal role that focuses on managing a diverse portfolio of small business accounts. This position is designed for individuals who are decisive, detail-oriented, and possess strong relationship-building skills. The Account Executive will partner with agents to provide comprehensive property and casualty coverage tailored to the unique needs of small businesses, including Main Street retailers, small manufacturers, and property owners. The role requires a proactive approach to underwriting, where the executive will assess risks and negotiate terms to ensure profitability and retention of accounts in a high-volume, fast-paced environment. In this role, the Account Executive will be responsible for the profitability, growth, and retention of an assigned book of business. This includes underwriting and negotiating property and casualty accounts, ensuring that the underwriting quality meets the company's standards. The executive will apply appropriate levels of underwriting analysis based on the complexity of risks to make informed decisions about accepting, declining, modifying, or quoting accounts. Building and maintaining relationships with both internal partners and external agents and brokers is crucial, as the Account Executive will regularly meet with these stakeholders to market and sell Travelers products. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in commercial lines underwriting, with at least two years of relevant experience. They will be expected to collaborate effectively with underwriting leadership and sales executives to identify new business opportunities and develop sales plans. The role also involves performing additional duties as assigned, contributing to the overall success of the team and the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the profitability, growth, and retention of an assigned book of business in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
  • Underwrite and skillfully negotiate property and casualty accounts to minimize risk and maximize profitability.
  • Ensure underwriting quality and profitability through appropriate underwriting analysis based on risk complexity.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with internal partners to create sales plans and identify cross-selling opportunities.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with external partners by meeting with agents and brokers to market and sell Travelers products.
  • Partner with Sales Executives to identify and write new business opportunities using consultative marketing and sales skills.
  • Collaborate effectively with underwriting leadership as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Two years of underwriting experience.
  • Three to five years of relevant underwriting experience with experience in commercial lines.
  • Knowledge of commercial lines products.
  • Strong critical thinking skills to identify underwriting, marketing, or financial challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills to negotiate with agents and brokers.
  • CPCU designation.
