About the position

The Accountant I position at the City of Santa Monica involves performing accounting duties of average to difficult complexity to support the financial operations of various City departments. The role requires applying professional accounting principles and methods to maintain accounting records and prepare fiscal and financial reports, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the preparation, maintenance, and distribution of financial statements and reports, including the City's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR).
  • Analyzes fiscal transactions to ensure compliance with GAAP and municipal codes.
  • Collects, analyzes, and summarizes statistical data related to financial trends and operating costs.
  • Conducts reconciliations of various accounts, including bank and investment accounts.
  • Verifies, categorizes, posts, and reconciles revenues and expenditures to proper accounts.
  • Reviews requests to reclassify expenditures and prepares proposed journal entries.
  • Performs analysis of funds and accounts by reviewing general and subsidiary ledgers.
  • Makes adjustments and corrects errors as directed.
  • Conducts cost accounting studies and surveys.
  • Assists in preparing and maintaining various records and reports, including audit work papers and tax forms.
  • Provides assistance to City staff on posting routine transactions in the automated financial system.
  • Responds to requests for information regarding financial data and accounting policies.
  • Assists departmental staff with workers' compensation and housing claim payments.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting.
  • One year of recent, paid work experience in performing accounting or finance support duties is desirable.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures of accounting.
  • Ability to analyze data and prepare financial statements and reports.
  • Ability to learn and apply governmental accounting practices and procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Governmental accounting experience is desirable.
