About the position

The Accountant I position at Jewelers Mutual is responsible for providing accurate financial information, maintaining and reconciling general ledger accounts, and preparing financial reports and statements for the company. This role is essential in ensuring the financial integrity of the organization and involves various accounting tasks, including expense allocation, journal entry preparation, and financial statement preparation.

Responsibilities

  • Own the expense allocation process which assigns costs to business units and legal entities.
  • Compile and analyze financial information and accurately document business transactions.
  • Prepare standard and ad hoc journal entries including expense allocations and various receivables.
  • Investigate and correct errors and inconsistencies in financial journal entries and reports.
  • Prepare monthly balance sheet account reconciliations and document un-reconciled balances.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual insurance company statutory financial statements.
  • Utilize general ledger tools to automate financial data input into statutory financial statement software.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual state form filings and select premium tax returns.
  • Verify and add new vendors to accounting software and process updates.
  • Maintain and oversee payment processing software for vendor invoices and internal expense reports.
  • Prepare financial information requests for external auditors and regulators.
  • Identify and implement general ledger and monthly close process improvement opportunities.
  • Participate in department and strategic corporate project teams as requested.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting or equivalent experience.
  • 0 - 2 years related experience in accounting or finance.
  • Property/casualty insurance background and jewelry industry experience are helpful.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office, especially Excel and Word.
  • Experience with accounting and financial software is desired.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
