About the position

The Accountant III position within the Retirement Systems of the City of Detroit is an experienced-level role that requires minimal supervision. The role involves performing complex accounting duties to support accurate financial statement reporting, including preparing, analyzing, and presenting accounting data. The Accountant III will manage cost accounting systems, design internal control processes, and may delegate tasks to subordinate staff. This position is critical for ensuring compliance with accounting standards and regulations while providing insights to management.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, assigns, and coordinates the work of Accountant I and II and other clerical and administrative staff.
  • Creates financial reports using ERP Cloud applications.
  • Edits reporting templates and uses Business Intelligence Publisher templates and data models.
  • Creates transactions Business Intelligence dashboards and reports.
  • Analyzes data through SmartView and Account Monitor.
  • Performs complex accounting functions consistent with GAAP and other financial regulations.
  • Researches and implements accounting rules as stipulated by GASB or other regulatory agencies.
  • Evaluates fiscal accounting work including budget preparation and payroll analyses.
  • Conducts audits and develops reports on work processes and accounting systems.
  • Independently conducts tax examinations and related investigations.
  • Analyzes program operations for impact on accounting or financial management systems.
  • Prepares and analyzes accounting records and financial statements for accuracy and compliance.
  • Acts as a liaison between accounting staff and other key departmental staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, statistics, or a closely related field with at least 24 semester credits in accounting and statistics.
  • Three years of professional experience in accounting or auditing.
  • Proficiency with integrated word processing and spreadsheet functions.
  • Possession or pursuit of CPA or CMA certification may be required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with ERP systems such as Oracle or SAP.
  • Advanced knowledge of governmental accounting and budgeting principles.
