About the position

The Accountant III position at Cal State East Bay is a key role within the Financial Services department, focusing on advanced professional accounting work. This position involves preparation and filing of various tax returns, government reporting, and year-end close coordination. The Accountant III serves as a high-level contributor, providing expertise and lead work direction to other staff, ensuring compliance with accounting principles and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, analyze, and interpret financial reports, statements, and records.
  • Conduct extensive financial data compilation and querying on large volumes of financial data.
  • Review financial data, reports, and statements, identifying and analyzing errors and taking corrective action.
  • Prepare complex financial statements and reports, including endowment financial activity and University transactions.
  • Analyze account balances and reconcile balances to external data, ensuring accuracy and timely completion of reconciliations.
  • Monitor and report on balances on a Legal and GAAP basis.
  • Compile and prepare various filings such as NCAA reporting, UBIT Reporting, and Tax 990 schedules.
  • Respond to internal and external inquiries in compliance with University policy.
  • Provide training, guidance, and assistance to other employees, reviewing their work for accuracy and compliance.
  • Assure proper recording and documentation of financial transactions and contribute to the audit process.
  • Prepare audit schedules and financial reports for internal and external audits.
  • Identify actual or potential problems and recommend corrective actions.
  • Perform special tasks as assigned, including troubleshooting financial systems problems.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to five (5) years of professional level accounting experience.
  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with a major in accounting, business administration, finance, or a closely related field.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • Experience with Oracle Peoplesoft Finance Application.
  • Experience with Government or Higher Education.
  • Advanced skill level experience in Excel.
  • Higher level accounting related experience.
  • Experience with providing direction/training.
  • Strong customer service skills.
