About the position

The Accountant III position at Mono County is a self-managed role that requires minimal supervision to perform complex professional accounting and auditing tasks. The role involves preparing, analyzing, reviewing, maintaining, reconciling, and controlling financial records, as well as forecasting fiscal revenues and expenditures. The Accountant III may also supervise and train lower-level accountants and fiscal specialists, ensuring compliance with County fiscal policies and best practices in government finance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform accounting and fiscal analysis and forecasting across departments.
  • Provide fiscal leadership within departments to ensure compliance with the Budget Act.
  • Prepare various reports for analysis and compliance with fiscal policy.
  • Advise management on accounting and financial implications of department activities.
  • Serve as a staff consultant to County departments and other government agencies.
  • Audit and approve budget adjustments throughout the year.
  • Review and perform complex accounting assignments.
  • Supervise the development of improvements in internal controls or accounting practices.
  • Assist with the development and control of budget information.
  • Liaise with other government agencies, auditors, and the public.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of accounting theory, principles, and practices.
  • Thorough understanding of laws, rules, regulations, and policies affecting County financial operations.
  • Knowledge of government cost accounting and budgeting principles.
  • Familiarity with auditing theory and techniques as applied to government finance.
  • Ability to perform a variety of accounting and financial transaction work.
  • Proficiency in using computerized financial management systems and software.
  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate financial information and resolve problems.
  • Ability to prepare a variety of financial reports and statements.
  • Capacity to work under pressure and meet multiple deadlines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with County's computerized financial management, payroll, and property tax systems.
  • Proficiency in spreadsheet, word processing, and database software.
