About the position

The Accountant IV position at the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) is a high-level role responsible for auditing payroll and ensuring accurate payments to employees. This position requires independent work as well as collaboration with other accountants in the bureau. The Accountant IV will validate personnel actions, manage overpayment collections, and ensure compliance with state payroll and accounting policies.

Responsibilities

  • Audit payroll to prepare monthly and supplemental payrolls.
  • Ensure all members are paid correctly and audit records in the FLAIR system for accuracy.
  • Work with HSMV members to explain any discrepancies in payroll.
  • Validate Personnel Action Requests (PARs) received from the Bureau of Personnel (BPS).
  • Collect overpayments from members due to leave of absence (LOA) or leave without pay (LWOP).

Requirements

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of State of Florida payroll and accounting policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic and office procedures.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work assignments.
  • Ability to use sound judgment to identify problems and generate solutions.
  • Self-starter with the ability to manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Skill in auditing, reviewing, and reconciling data for compliance.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Effective communication skills with internal and external customers, both orally and in writing.
  • Experience using the Florida Accounting Information Resource (FLAIR) system and People First system.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience providing customer service, including guidance and problem resolution.
  • Experience using a payroll information management system.
  • Experience using spreadsheets for reporting or data calculation purposes.
  • Experience in processing payroll transactions.
