About the position

The Plant Accountant at Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the general accounting activities within the plant. This role involves maintaining an accurate general ledger, preparing financial reports, and analyzing variances to ensure compliance with financial policies and procedures. The Plant Accountant plays a crucial role in the financial health of the plant by managing payroll, guiding accounting associates, and providing insights into business operations.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, including preparation of estimates and accruals.
  • Resolve accounting discrepancies and irregularities.
  • Comply with financial policies and procedures, including PCA's SOX 404 Key Controls.
  • Engage in general accounting activities, including preparation, maintenance, and reconciliation of general ledger accounts and financial reports.
  • Develop, maintain, and analyze forecasts, preparing periodic reports comparing forecasts to actual costs.
  • Follow up on customer accounts, including credit issuances and collection activity.
  • Ensure accurate processing of hourly payroll and related payroll/employee functions.
  • Guide, develop, and train accounting associates, assisting the Plant Controller in supervising their day-to-day activities.
  • Prepare, examine, and analyze accounting records, financial statements, and other financial reports for accuracy and completeness.
  • Analyze business operations, trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations to project future revenues and expenses.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance or equivalent work experience.
  • Three (3) years of previous work experience in a business office/accounting department with exposure to general ledger, payroll, and/or accounts payable functions.
  • Strong working knowledge of computer systems such as Microsoft Office, with exceptional knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with financial systems for invoicing, credit/collections, expense reporting, accounts payable, payroll, and general ledger.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience in the manufacturing sector, containerboard, and corrugated packaging industry.
