About the position

The position involves overseeing accounting operations within the Bureau of Prisons, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures, and facilitating communication between various financial entities. The role is crucial for maintaining accurate financial data and providing insights for management decisions, ultimately contributing to the agency's mission of public safety and successful community reintegration.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates and interprets bureau policies and procedures for accounting operations.
  • Oversees accounting operations of field installations and the Regional office.
  • Monitors accuracy and completeness of accounting data in the Financial Management Information System (FMIS).
  • Analyzes and consolidates accounting data to identify trends and prepare forecasts.
  • Prepares reports on accounting operations, identifying issues and recommending solutions.
  • Acts as a liaison between the Finance Branch and accounting personnel at field installations.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • A degree in Accounting or a related field with 24 semester hours in accounting, or equivalent experience.
  • For GS-11: Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or a Ph.D. degree.
  • For GS-12: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in federal fund, property, payroll, grantee, and cost accounting.
  • Knowledge of financial policies, procedures, and guidelines.
