About the position

The Accountant position at the National Estuarine Research Reserve Association (NERRA) is a part-time role focused on managing and overseeing the financial activities of the organization. The successful candidate will work closely with the Executive Director and Director of Operations, ensuring compliance with federal grant regulations and preparing financial statements. This role requires a detail-oriented individual with experience in accounting, particularly in a non-profit or grant-funded environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain accurate financial statements.
  • Negotiate the organization's indirect cost rate with the federal government.
  • Perform regular accounting tasks, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Register and maintain the organization's information in the System for Award Management (SAM) for federal grants.
  • Assist in the preparation and coordination of the annual single audit, including gathering necessary documents and responding to inquiries from the auditing firm.
  • Collaborate with auditors to prepare the annual IRS Form 990 and thoroughly review the completed form for accuracy and compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with federal grant regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Assist with budget preparation and financial planning.
  • Provide financial reports and analysis to support decision-making.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, preferably in a non-profit or grant-funded environment.
  • Familiarity with federal grant regulations and the SAM registration process.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices (GAAP).
  • Proficiency in accounting software including QuickBooks Online.
  • Proficiency with the Google Platform and the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Benefits

  • Salary range of $31,000 - $38,000
  • Flexibility to work remotely, with a preference for physical presence at least 1 day per week.
