About the position

The Accountant position at the City of Coronado involves performing complex and specialized duties in professional accounting and financial analyses to support citywide operations. The role includes developing financial record-keeping procedures, compiling financial statements, budgeting, and participating in the management of financial systems. The Accountant will also serve as the lead accountant, assist in the annual budget development, and work on special projects across the city.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement financial record-keeping procedures.
  • Compile and interpret complex financial statements.
  • Budget and forecast revenue and expenditures.
  • Participate in the implementation and management of financial systems.
  • Train other city staff in accounting practices.
  • Serve as the lead accountant and backup to other finance positions.
  • Assist in the development and management of the City's annual budget.
  • Participate in fiscal year-end closing and Annual Comprehensive Financial Reporting (ACFR).
  • Work on special projects within the finance division and across the city.

Requirements

  • At least two years of increasingly responsible technical accounting experience, including general ledger.
  • Mid-level professional accounting experience with a governmental agency is preferred.
  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or related field.
  • Experience in preparing a variety of accounting, statistical, budget, and financial reports.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience in the implementation and management of financial systems, specifically Tyler Munis.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive and clear financial statements and reports.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience training or guiding other finance staff and end users.
  • Knowledge of federal and state grant laws and procedures.
  • Experience creating desk or standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to identify process gaps and make recommendations for process improvement.
