About the position

The Accounting Assistant will support the accounting department of Global Impact, a nonprofit organization, by performing various administrative and financial tasks. This role requires strong analytical skills, proficiency in accounting software, and the ability to manage multiple priorities independently. The position is based in Alexandria, VA, and operates in a hybrid work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and maintain workflow calendars, schedule meetings, and take detailed meeting notes.
  • Maintain a comprehensive filing system within the accounting software for financial information, records, and documents.
  • Research, update, and maintain accounting policies to ensure they are current and aligned with industry standards.
  • Handle the cutting, mailing, logging, and depositing of checks, ensuring accuracy and timeliness in financial transactions.
  • Initiate international wires for the Employee Assistance Program and investigate any returned wires.
  • Follow-up with appropriate staff on pending approvals and missing receipts for corporate cards and out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Maintain and organize correspondence within the department's email inbox.
  • Format financial reports for executives and board packets, ensuring clarity and accuracy.
  • Assist with annual audits and tax returns by providing necessary documentation and support.
  • Assist with additional reports and requests as needed.

Requirements

  • High School diploma with 1 to 2 years of relevant experience, OR a bachelor's degree with up to 1 year of experience in a support or administrative position.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 tools, with advanced Excel skills.
  • Familiarity with software systems such as ANDAR, Bill.com, and QuickBooks.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and collaborate effectively with various teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in nonprofit finance or accounting environments.
  • Familiarity with financial reporting standards.
