About the position

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative has an immediate opening for an Accounting & Budgeting Manager. This is a Mid-Level Management position. The primary function of this position will be to supervise the accounting and budgeting team ensuring training and processes are in place to handle transactions accurately and timely. The Accounting & Budgeting Manager will be responsible for the preparation of the operating and capital budgets for submission to the Senior Vice President & CFO and the President & CEO. This role also includes preparing the annual budget presentation for the Board of Directors. In addition to budget preparation, the manager supervises the preparation of monthly and annual financial reporting, including consolidated financial statements and statistical reports. They will create reports using various applications and ensure data and reporting integrity for transactions interfacing into the General Ledger. The manager will assist others in training on the accounting system and reporting as needed for accounting and budgeting purposes, and provide technical assistance in the computerization of accounting functions. The Accounting & Budgeting Manager will review, analyze, and interpret account variances, facts, and trend analysis in financial statements and reconciliations. They will also prepare and review regulatory reporting and fully participate in the annual audit for data gathering, question and answer sessions, remediation, recommendations, etc. Candidates must be highly motivated, self-starters who possess and utilize critical thinking skills regularly in their work, making time management a priority. Leadership skills are essential to guide and assist the team, along with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn new systems, processes, personalities, and disciplines to recognize, analyze, and solve day-to-day challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the accounting and budgeting team ensuring training and processes are in place to handle transactions accurately and timely.

  • Prepare the annual budget presentation for the Board of Directors.
  • Supervise the preparation of monthly and annual financial reporting, including consolidated financial statements and statistical reports.

  • Assist others in training on the accounting system and reporting as needed for accounting and budgeting purposes.

Requirements

  • Four-year college degree with emphasis in accounting or business.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is desired.
  • Minimum of eight years progressive accounting experience with an electric utility or other commercial operation in related areas.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in personal computer skills and an understanding of automated accounting systems and applications.
  • Management and administration experience is required.
  • Strong analytical, communication (both verbal and written), and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
