About the position

The Accounting Clerk at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis is responsible for managing accounts payable, issuing checks, and performing various accounting duties to support the finance department. This full-time position requires attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Process invoices and prepare checks weekly.
  • Verify appropriate approvals for payments.
  • Coordinate and obtain signatures for checks.
  • Maintain current filing of paid accounts payable invoices.
  • Assist staff with inquiries related to accounts payable.
  • Update state tax exemptions, W9 forms, and addresses as required.
  • Keep vendor listings current and eliminate duplicates regularly.
  • Prepare signed checks for mailing/distribution.
  • Resolve discrepancies between vendors, employees, and third parties.
  • Accurately enter transactions into accounting software.
  • Reconcile monthly credit card/PEX expenses.
  • Assist with audit schedule preparation as requested.
  • Maintain the accuracy of the general ledger and review data entry.
  • Box and file previous year's documents per the document retention policy.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in accounting or a satisfactory combination of education, experience, and training.
  • Two or more years of strong accounts payable experience.
  • Experience with an accounting package.
  • Extraordinary attention to detail and commitment to meeting deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, word processing, and spreadsheets.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a nonprofit organization.
  • Familiarity with audit processes.
