About the position

The Accounting Manager / Assistant Controller at Luther College is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the institution, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and advising management on resource utilization to enhance operational efficiency. This role involves managing financial reporting, supervising accounting staff, and leading special projects to improve accounting processes.

Responsibilities

  • Compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare entries to general ledger accounts documenting business transactions.
  • Reviews financial transactions to ensure accordance with GAAP/FASB and applicable laws, rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Verifies source documents for accuracy, completeness, authorization, and coding to verify general ledger balances and reconcile subsystems.
  • Reviews, investigates, and corrects errors and inconsistencies in financial entries, documents, and reports.
  • Reconciles accounts, initiates corrective actions, and recommends system and process changes based on evaluations and analyses.
  • Assists with establishing accounting procedures and internal controls to ensure compliance with accounting standards and best practices.
  • Conducts studies and submits recommendations for improving the organization's accounting operation.
  • Assists with financial statement preparation and performs year-end adjustments for the annual financial statement audit.
  • Oversees nonresident alien taxation and ensures compliance with IRS requirements.
  • Supports the financial and administrative functions of subsidiary operations.

Requirements

  • BA degree in accounting, finance, or a business-related field is required.
  • Three or more years of management experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of computerized financial accounting systems is needed.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with the ability to read and write advanced Excel formulas.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to work with diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions based on general guidelines.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Non-profit accounting experience in higher education with CPA certificate is preferred but not required.
