About the position

The Accounting Manager at Berkley Mid-Atlantic Insurance Group plays a crucial role in overseeing the monthly close processes and ensuring the accuracy of financial reporting. This position involves the preparation of various analytic schedules that detail the financial results, as well as the production of financial statements and supporting exhibits that are included in the financial reporting package. The Accounting Manager will monitor financial systems, procedures, and controls to ensure compliance and efficiency. A key responsibility is to analyze the sufficiency of accruals, which is vital for accurate financial reporting. In addition to these core responsibilities, the Accounting Manager will review or prepare periodic journal entries and management reports, ensuring that all financial data is accurate and up-to-date. The role also includes preparing monthly and quarterly calculations and monitoring significant financial statements, which are essential for the company's financial health. The Accounting Manager will be responsible for limited monthly and quarterly statutory reporting, as well as reviewing and preparing internal and external reinsurance reporting requirements. Collaboration with the Financial Planning and Analysis (FPA) function is also a critical aspect of this role, as the Accounting Manager will assist in the preparation of financial planning forecasts and other related planning inputs and exhibits. Furthermore, the Accounting Manager will conduct financial analyses and support special projects that align with operating units or corporate initiatives. This includes reviewing financial accounts and preparing account reconciliations and analyses. Maintaining the internal control environment, including compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), is another essential responsibility. The Accounting Manager will also be tasked with developing and implementing process enhancements to improve efficiencies, leveraging technology and data warehouses. Other related duties may be assigned by management as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing financial accounts and preparing account reconciliations and/or analyses.
  • Maintaining internal control environment, including SOX compliance.
  • Developing and implementing process enhancements to improve efficiencies, leveraging technology and data warehouses.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

  • BS/BA in Finance or Accounting; or eight years related experience.
  • Property/Casualty insurance industry experience required.
  • Reinsurance Accounting and Reporting preferred.
  • Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Proactive self-starter with excellent time management abilities.
  • Strong customer orientation with the ability to respond quickly and professionally to inquiries.
  • Strong communication skills to work effectively with internal and external business partners.
  • Regularly and consistently demonstrates commitment to company values and guiding principles.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Oracle PeopleSoft, Visual Basic and SQL preferred.
