About the position

The Accounting Manager at the University of the Pacific will play a crucial role in managing the business and accounting functions for the San Francisco campus. This position operates under the supervision of the Associate Dean of Budget and Financial Administration and is responsible for overseeing financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, grants and contracts, procurement, and cashiering. The Accounting Manager will ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), governmental regulations, and university policies while implementing best business practices. In this role, the Accounting Manager will collaborate with Business & Accounting leaders across the university to identify and create process improvements. They will evaluate accounting trends and analyze data to enhance operational processes. The manager will also be responsible for establishing and implementing effective policies, procedures, and internal controls, as well as managing the complete year-end close process for the campus. This includes ensuring proper revenue recognition, managing pre-paid expenses, conducting physical inventory counts, and overseeing accounts receivable aging. Additionally, the Accounting Manager will oversee the management of capital assets, ensuring annual physical inventory is conducted and collaborating with the Business & Accounting department in Stockton on depreciation schedules and retirement of capital assets. They will act as the primary liaison between external auditors and the San Francisco campus, maintaining and updating documentation on policies, procedures, and internal controls. The role also involves providing technical accounting and GAAP guidance, supporting internal and external customers with accounting transactions, and reviewing and advising on process improvements. The manager will ensure that the Business & Accounting office is staffed with qualified personnel and will be responsible for the continued development of these employees. This position requires a commitment to excellence and high standards, effective collaboration with university leadership, and the ability to supervise, develop, and evaluate staff members. The Accounting Manager will also need to maintain confidentiality and work with integrity while engaging with diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and direct business and accounting activities for the San Francisco campus.
  • Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, governmental regulations, and University policies.
  • Collaborate with Business & Accounting leaders to create process improvements.
  • Evaluate accounting trends and analyze data for operational process improvements.
  • Manage the year-end close process for the San Francisco campus.
  • Oversee management of capital assets and ensure annual physical inventory is conducted.
  • Review and approve all journal entry requests, accounts payable requests, purchasing requests, and invoice requests.
  • Manage all grants and contracts for the San Francisco campus.
  • Act as primary liaison between external auditors and the San Francisco campus.
  • Maintain and update documentation on policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Provide technical accounting and GAAP guidance.
  • Support and assist internal and external customers with accounting transactions.
  • Review, analyze, and advise on process improvements and resource efficiencies.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with internal and external constituencies.
  • Ensure the office is staffed with qualified financial personnel and responsible for their development.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Budget and Financial Administration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting.
  • Minimum of six years of experience in an accounting position role.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in an accounting management position.
  • Advanced knowledge of GAAP.
  • Advanced accounting reconciliation skills and financial reporting skills within GAAP.
  • Advanced analytical and research skills.
  • Proficiency in MS-Office applications with advanced Excel skills.
