About the position

The Accounting Manager position at our prestigious law firm is a senior administrative role that requires a candidate with extensive experience in accounting, particularly within the legal industry. This role is based in Syracuse, NY, and will report directly to the Office Manager while working closely with the firm's Executive Committee. The Accounting Manager will oversee all financial operations and functions of the firm, ensuring the integrity of financial practices and collaborating with financial institutions, auditors, and CPAs. In this role, you will be responsible for directing and maintaining the financial functions of the firm, which includes overseeing cash management, billing, collections, vendor payments, payroll, audits, and retirement plan issues. You will also evaluate, implement, and support effective internal financial controls, assisting in the implementation of financial and business tactics to advance the firm's strategic plan. Your input will be valuable to the Executive Committee as you optimize the performance of the Bookkeeping Department, ensuring accurate daily transactions and providing excellent customer service. As a leader, you will recruit, train, evaluate, and develop the Bookkeeping Department staff, conducting timely financial analyses to advise on business transactions and strategic initiatives. You will prepare and distribute monthly partnership financial reports and statements, ensuring that all financial information is presented clearly and concisely to attorneys and groups. This position requires a meticulous attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively in diverse teams. A hands-on approach and experience with process improvement and project management initiatives are essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and maintain responsibility for the financial functions of the firm.
  • Ensure the integrity of the firm's financial practices and collaborate with financial institutions, auditors, and CPAs.
  • Evaluate, implement, and support effective internal financial controls.
  • Assist in implementing financial and business tactics to advance the firm's strategic plan, offering input to the Executive Committee.

  • Optimize the performance of the Bookkeeping Department, ensuring accurate daily transactions and providing excellent customer service.
  • Recruit, train, evaluate, and develop Bookkeeping Department staff.
  • Conduct timely financial analyses to advise on business transactions and strategic initiatives, generating necessary financial reports.
  • Prepare and distribute monthly partnership financial reports and statements.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated proficiency in law firm billing/accounting system software.
  • Seven to Ten years of experience required, with a preference for the legal industry.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge, including GAAP, tax regulations, and auditing procedures.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present financial information clearly and concisely to attorneys and groups.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in diverse teams.
  • Comfortable with a hands-on approach and adept at managing change.
  • Experience with process improvement and project management initiatives.
  • Strong leadership and management capabilities.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Management, or Finance; MBA preferred.
