About the position

The Accounting Manager at Smithfield Foods is responsible for overseeing accounting functions, ensuring compliance with internal finance policies, SOX, and US GAAP. This role involves planning, directing, and managing timely analysis and decision support within the finance department, while also providing accounting support for new acquisitions and system conversions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform accounting and internal control responsibilities in accordance with GAAP, SOX 404 and company policy.
  • Collaborate with financial reporting group and FP&A to research, resolve and communicate findings regarding business transactions.
  • Provide accounting support for new acquisitions and system conversions, including reviewing and interpreting financial data.
  • Prepare general ledger entries by maintaining supporting records, performing calculations and analysis, and reconciling accounts.
  • Perform account reconciliations for assigned general ledger accounts and make appropriate adjusting or correcting entries.
  • Review account reconciliations and general ledger entries prepared by staff accountants.
  • Implement system checks to identify and correct errors before the general ledger is closed.
  • Prepare BPC journal entries as needed and conduct variance analysis.
  • Coordinate periodic meetings with department managers to review expenses and address questions.
  • Manage the annual SG&A budget compilation for assigned centers and assist the General Accounting Director in coordinating the comprehensive SG&A budget.
  • Support quarterly, semi-annual and annual audit, tax and reporting requests.
  • Answer accounting and financial questions by researching and interpreting data.
  • Serve as master data gatekeeper, reviewing and approving all general ledger account changes.
  • Develop and implement accounting procedures by analyzing existing procedures and recommending changes.
  • Cross train with other general accounting personnel as assigned.
  • Initiate and manage process improvements and system enhancements for the role.
  • Participate in implementation efforts for various accounting tools and software projects.
  • Supply financial information and analysis for internal and external audit inquiries.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • 5+ years of related experience and training in accounting.
  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience in team management or project leadership.
  • CPA license preferred.
  • Public accounting experience strongly encouraged.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial and business principles, including GAAP.
  • Strong experience with general ledger, account reconciliation, and analysis.
  • Knowledge of SAP ERP software preferred.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Excel and proficient with other Microsoft Office tools.
  • Strong decision-making, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Solid mathematical skills and high degree of accuracy and detail orientation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism.
