About the position

As a vital member of our Finance team, the Accounting Manager will support the Assistant Corporate Controller by managing a range of accounting functions within our waste management operations. This role involves overseeing P&L functions, financial analysis, lease accounting, balance sheet reconciliations, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and audit support. Additionally, the Accounting Manager will play a key role in budgeting processes and contribute to the overall financial strategy of the organization. This position offers an opportunity to drive financial performance and ensure accurate, timely financial reporting. The Accounting Manager will oversee the preparation and analysis of monthly profit and loss (P&L) statements, ensuring accuracy in reporting and reviewing financial data to identify trends and variances. This role requires conducting detailed financial analysis to support strategic decision-making, managing accounting for operating and finance leases in compliance with ASC 842, and supervising regular balance sheet reconciliations to ensure the integrity of financial records. In addition to these responsibilities, the Accounting Manager will manage prepaid expenses, oversee the accounting for fixed assets, and provide support for internal and external audits. The role also includes assisting in the budgeting process by preparing detailed budget forecasts and financial models, monitoring budget performance, and analyzing variances. The Accounting Manager will be expected to identify and implement process improvements to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of accounting operations while providing guidance and support to the accounting team.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the preparation and analysis of monthly profit and loss (P&L) statements.
  • Conduct detailed financial analysis to support strategic decision-making.
  • Manage accounting for operating and finance leases in compliance with ASC 842.
  • Supervise and perform regular balance sheet reconciliations to ensure accuracy.
  • Manage the accounting for prepaid expenses, including recording and amortizing costs.
  • Oversee the accounting for fixed assets, including tracking acquisitions and depreciation.
  • Provide support for internal and external audits by preparing schedules and documentation.
  • Assist in the budgeting process by preparing detailed budget forecasts and financial models.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance accounting operations.
  • Provide guidance and support to the accounting team, mentoring and developing staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA certification or progress towards CPA is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience with at least 2 years in a managerial role.
  • Experience in the waste management industry or a similar field is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in general ledger systems; experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 or similar ERP systems is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and industry-specific accounting requirements.
  • Experience with lease accounting, balance sheet reconciliations, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and budgeting.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Proven leadership abilities with experience in managing and developing a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with advanced Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUP).
  • Familiarity with financial modeling and forecasting techniques.
