About the position

Geller & Company is seeking a dedicated Accounting Manager for a not-for-profit organization that is rapidly scaling. This organization focuses on educating the public and policymakers about public safety and crime reduction. The Accounting Manager will serve as a vital resource for this client, managing day-to-day financial operations and ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting. Reporting directly to the CFO and Senior Accounting Manager, the successful candidate will work closely with the existing finance team to provide leadership and direction for financial policy and overall management of financial operations. In this role, the Accounting Manager will collaborate with the CFO and Deputy CFO to ensure smooth daily financial operations, including financial reporting, control, and cash flow management. The manager will be responsible for preparing and reviewing monthly financial reports, overseeing budget implementation, and anticipating critical questions regarding large expenditures. Additionally, the Accounting Manager will lead the preparation and review of monthly close documentation, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, while also recording and reviewing journal entries for various transactions. The position requires effective communication and coordination with clients, vendors, donors, and bankers, as well as the development of process innovations to enhance cash management functions. The Accounting Manager will also prepare annual financial audit workpapers, financial statements, and tax schedules, while managing grant reporting requirements for nonprofit organizations. Onsite support at the client location will be necessary to facilitate financial and operational efficiencies. The role also includes assisting with the annual budget process and providing ongoing training to the finance team to develop more efficient processes.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure day-to-day financial operations run smoothly, including financial reporting and cash flow management.
  • Provide monthly financial reports and guidance to managers responsible for budget implementation.
  • Oversee monthly reporting efforts and anticipate critical questions regarding large expenditures.
  • Lead the preparation and review of monthly close documentation, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
  • Record and review journal entries for payroll, investments, intercompany transactions, and other complex transactions.
  • Review weekly cash account balance updates and ensure all client accounts are sufficiently funded.
  • Prepare and review budgeting to actual expenses on a monthly basis.
  • Prepare and review ad-hoc financial analysis summary reports as needed.
  • Communicate and coordinate with clients, vendors, donors, and bankers as appropriate.
  • Assist in the development of process innovations to streamline work and add value to cash management functions.
  • Prepare and review annual financial audit workpapers, financial statements, and footnotes.
  • Correspond with auditors and instruct staff accountants as needed.
  • Prepare and review tax schedules for 990 and other tax forms on an annual basis.
  • Manage grant reporting requirements and track restricted assets for nonprofit organizations.
  • Provide onsite support at client location to facilitate financial and operational efficiencies.
  • Assist with annual budget process and review accuracy of information in budget tracking tool.
  • Assist in operations, including insurance renewals and administration of software and platforms.
  • Provide ongoing training to the team and develop more efficient processes.

Requirements

  • BA or equivalent in Accounting.
  • 7-10 years of accounting experience working with a variety of clients.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Meticulous attention to detail and highly organized.
  • Team player with the ability to deal in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills with the ability to plan and prioritize within a multi-client environment.
  • Experience in financial management within a not-for-profit organization.
  • 3 or more years of experience in supervising and managing a team of at least 5 people.
  • A dedicated leader/manager who is collaborative and team-oriented, self-motivated, and can build consensus.
  • Committed to the mission, purpose, and values of the organization and its programs.
  • Experience collaborating with diverse groups of stakeholders and effective communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • CFP®, CPA or other professional designations.
  • Not for Profit accounting and audit experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics, Sage Intacct, and/or Concur.
  • Tax preparation experience.
