About the position

The Tax Manager at Johns Hopkins University will oversee the Tax Office's compliance with employment tax matters, ensuring adherence to federal and state tax obligations. This role involves managing a team responsible for tax compliance related to U.S. compensation, benefits, and payments for university employees, students, and scholars. The Tax Manager will collaborate with various departments to gather necessary information for tax filings and will play a key role in maintaining the university's tax compliance framework.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the timely completion of all federal and state employment tax payments, compliance filings, and notice responses.
  • Oversee the completion of unemployment, family leave, and similar compliance filings and their associated payments and notice responses.
  • Manage employment tax compliance for the University's nonresident students and scholars.
  • Oversee ERP/HCM system testing and maintenance related to employment tax.
  • Partner with University Payroll Shared Services and Human Resources Shared Services to ensure timely processing of tax-related payroll adjustments.
  • Conduct worker classification reviews.
  • Manage and develop staff within the Tax Office.
  • Oversee the University's external tax advisors supporting employment matters.
  • Provide tax technical support and guidance to various University stakeholders regarding employment, tuition reporting, vendor reporting, and nonresident tax reporting.
  • Research technical tax matters on payroll tax topics.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Tax Director, including special projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or related field.
  • Seven years of progressively responsible related work experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Nice-to-haves

  • CPA Preferred.
  • Certified Payroll Professional a plus.

  • Competitive salary range of $85,500 - $149,800 annually, commensurate with experience.
  • Full-time employment with a Monday to Friday schedule from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
