About the position

The Accounting/Payroll Specialist at Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity plays a crucial role in supporting the financial operations of the organization. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records in accordance with accounting standards for non-profit agencies, ensuring confidentiality in payroll processing, and overseeing accounts payable functions. The specialist will work closely with the finance team to support month-end and year-end closing processes, while also contributing to special projects as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and process bi-weekly payroll via online payroll application, ensuring confidentiality.
  • Oversee and execute the accounts payable function with high ethics and integrity.
  • Record incoming cash and credit card transactions.
  • Support Controller and CFO in month-end closing processes.
  • Complete monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Maintain reconciliations for general ledger accounts and complete journal entries.
  • Assist Controller in year-end closing processes and preparation for annual audit.
  • Maintain proper internal controls and accounting/payroll processes and procedures manual.
  • Handle special projects as requested and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate degree with a financial emphasis required; 4-year degree a plus.
  • Minimum of 3 years related experience in accounting or payroll.
  • Thorough understanding of bookkeeping practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of accounting software required; experience with QuickBooks preferred.
  • Knowledge of payroll systems required; experience with ADP or similar systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of automated accounts payable system preferred; experience with SAP Concur a plus.
  • Proficiency with MS Office products.
  • Ability to set priorities and manage multiple projects efficiently.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Strong communication skills to work across departments and with various levels of management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of the non-profit sector a plus.
  • Experience working with volunteers a plus.
