About the position

Pacific Life is investing in bright, agile, and diverse new talent to ensure we continue to innovate and strengthen relationships with our policyholders. That's why we're actively seeking an Accounting & Reporting Consultant to join our team to support our centralized accounting team. This role is based in our Newport Beach, CA office (with a hybrid work schedule). However, we will consider 100% remote for the right candidate. In this position, you will drive key initiatives that support the Consumer Markets accounting and financial reporting function. You will design, plan, and execute monthly, quarterly, and annual deliverables and related internal controls. Your role will involve developing and providing concise, relevant, and meaningful reporting and analysis to facilitate management's review of the financial results. As a subject matter expert, you will contribute interpretation, advice, and perspective especially on highly technical and complex subject matters. You will communicate issues and the business impact to management, offering perspective and solutions, while collaborating with business partners throughout the organization at various levels. Some of the essential job duties include leading efforts to design accounting entries and reporting requirements for new transactions and events, coordinating with SMEs and stakeholders in actuarial, accounting, reporting, tax, and technology teams. You will develop a network to draw on expertise and ask the right questions, drawing conclusions and making recommendations in accordance with technical guidance and knowledge of industry practice. You will also lead analysis and reporting initiatives, preparing quarterly analysis of results and trends to drive business insights, ensuring impacts of specific business events are clearly represented in our accounting results and documented in our financial reporting. Additionally, you will support the controllership function by preparing or approving journal entries and account reconciliations as needed, supporting audit requests, and Finance projects and initiatives, both small scale and transformative. As a recognized expert within the organization, you will interpret internal or external business issues and recommend process, product, or service improvements, contributing to the development of functional strategy. You will solve unique or complex problems that have a broad impact on the business, taking a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions and explaining technical concepts to various levels of familiarity with insurance accounting.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • 4-year degree or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Teams, Outlook, etc.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities under tight time frames.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to work well in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong accountability, customer focus, and collaboration.
  • Comfortable with collaborating with all levels of management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Insurance industry experience.
  • Experience or certification with PeopleSoft, Oracle, Essbase, or ARCs.
  • CPA candidacy or licensure.
  • Public accounting experience.
