About the position

The Office of the State Auditor (OSA) is seeking an Accounting Specialist to join the Business Operations Division. This full-time role involves supporting key accounting and financial operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and maintaining compliance with state regulations. The position offers a flexible work schedule and the opportunity to contribute to the efficiency of state government operations.

Responsibilities

  • Enter accounting journal entries including deposits, reclassifications, and accruals into the NC Financial System (NCFS).
  • Ensure all recurring invoices are received and paid timely, conducting necessary follow-ups with Division managers and regional office staff.
  • Prepare weekly payment packages for OSA and print checks associated with those payments.
  • Complete monthly bank reconciliation, OSC certification, and purchase card reconciliation.
  • Assist the Accounting Manager in preparing OSA audit bills and managing OSA's capital and noncapital assets.
  • Prepare the Office's annual financial statements.
  • Maintain a current chart of accounts for ongoing payments, including required coding adjustments.
  • Collect information for the issuance of 1099s to OSA vendors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, or related field; OR an Associate degree in accounting with three years of accounting or auditing experience; OR a high school diploma with four years of experience as an accounting technician, three of which must be at an advanced technical level.
  • Considerable working knowledge of accounting methods, procedures, and practices.
  • Experience in posting, calculating, and recording financial data or making computations.
  • Experience preparing standard financial statements and reports.
  • Experience verifying accounting documents and forms for accuracy and completeness.
