About the position

The City of Mesa, AZ is seeking an Accounting Specialist II to join the Financial Services Department. This position is responsible for performing advanced journey-level technical accounts maintenance and paraprofessional work within a major accounting section, which may include Accounts Payable, Revenues/Receipts, Payroll, or Cost/Property. The Accounting Specialist II must possess a thorough understanding of accounts maintenance practices relevant to their functional area, as well as a solid grasp of accounting concepts and principles. This role requires the ability to explain and interpret financial information and to work independently in a fast-paced environment. In this position, the Accounting Specialist II will routinely handle complex problems and situations, exercising independent judgment in decision-making related to their area of assignment. Key technical activities include account reconciliation, balancing payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, deposit, and sales tax accounts. The specialist will also be responsible for journal voucher preparation, invoice initiation, property classification, and assisting with financial statement preparation. Additionally, they will prepare worksheets, research and interpret source documents to resolve account discrepancies, and collaborate with other City departments to implement new software solutions that meet reporting needs. Paraprofessional tasks may involve acting in a lead capacity, providing training for subordinate staff, or functionally supervising personnel working on special projects. The Accounting Specialist II will also provide input to supervisory personnel regarding the performance of subordinates for evaluation purposes. This position is distinguished from the Accounting Specialist I by the responsibility for lead work and a broader scope of paraprofessional assignments. The employee will be supervised by professional-level accounting staff through reports, conferences, and meetings. This position is classified as FLSA nonexempt.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely-related field.
  • A minimum of three years of full-time journey-level clerical accounting experience.
