About the position

The Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Division of Employment and Training Services, is recruiting for an Accounting Technician 1/2 located in Juneau. This position is in the General Government Unit (GGU) at a Range 12/14. As a part of our Juneau Unemployment Insurance (UI) Tax team, this position provides customer service support to the public by telephone or email, and registers new employers for UI Tax accounts. This position processes Alaska Quarterly Contribution reports and tax payments, researches and updates discrepancies in employer accounts and employee wage records, prepares and processes accounting adjustments and refunds. We work in concert with five field offices located in Juneau, Anchorage, Kenai, Wasilla, and Fairbanks. This is a flexibly staffed position that requires a very specific skill set for flexing, and will be hired as an Accounting Tech 1. We support your career growth by offering a clear path to advancement from Accounting Tech 1 to Accounting Tech 2 upon meeting the requirements and completing the training plan (usually within 18 months).

Responsibilities

  • Provide customer service support to the public by telephone or email.
  • Register new employers for UI Tax accounts.
  • Process Alaska Quarterly Contribution reports and tax payments.
  • Research and update discrepancies in employer accounts and employee wage records.
  • Prepare and process accounting adjustments and refunds.

Requirements

  • One year of clerical work experience maintaining records that included using computer systems and performing basic arithmetic calculations.
  • Successful completion of a formal vocational education program in accounting or bookkeeping will substitute for the required experience.
  • Post secondary education from an accredited college will substitute for the required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month).

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification as an Accounting Technician from an accredited college will substitute for the required experience.
  • Post secondary education from an accredited college will substitute for the required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) if it includes at least 6 semester/8 quarter hours in Accounting.
