About the position

The Accounting Technician II position at the Community College of Aurora is a vital role within the Fiscal Department, specifically located in the Cashier's Office at the CentreTech Campus. This position requires a strong commitment to customer service, as the technician will interact daily with students, faculty, and staff to facilitate payments and deposits at the Cashier window. The technician will be responsible for posting cash receipts on student accounts, ensuring accurate coding of revenue by source, and maintaining both physical and virtual files related to cash handling procedures. The role also involves preparing bank deposits, balancing credit card payments, and correcting errors on student accounts, all while adhering to state cash handling procedures and fiscal rules. In addition to these responsibilities, the Accounting Technician II will provide exceptional customer service by addressing inquiries from faculty, staff, and students regarding billing issues, payment plans, and refunds. The technician will need to maintain professionalism and establish a positive rapport with customers, while also coordinating with other departments to resolve any issues that arise. Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365, particularly Excel for tracking payments and preparing reconciliations, is essential. The technician will also utilize the Banner system for student accounts and general ledger queries, ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This position is open only to Colorado state residents and requires a background check as part of the hiring process. The successful candidate will demonstrate a high level of attention to detail, effective communication skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. The role may also involve varied work hours, including coverage for special events outside of regular hours, and is subject to video surveillance in the Cashier's Office.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize excellent customer service skills while interacting with students and departments at the Cashier window.
  • Post cash receipts on student accounts by entering payments into the Transact system.
  • Determine proper account numbers for deposit receipts to accurately code revenue by source.
  • Maintain physical and virtual files in the Cashier's Office, including cash batches and miscellaneous payment forms.
  • Ensure compliance with state cash handling procedures and documentation.
  • Prepare bank deposits by batching daily money received and completing deposit slips.
  • Balance credit card payments made on the web to the Banner Student Module.
  • Record daily batch activity via journal entries and correct errors on student accounts.
  • Notify the Collections Specialist of payments received for accounts in collections.
  • Answer inquiries from faculty, staff, and students regarding billing issues and payment options.
  • Coordinate with other cashiers and departments to resolve issues and stay updated on product knowledge.
  • Utilize State Collections Procedures, State Fiscal Rules, and GAAP in daily duties.

Requirements

  • Two years of technical accounting experience as a main function of the job.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service and interfacing with a diverse population.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Collections experience.
  • Working knowledge of Banner or similar systems.
  • High level of speed and accuracy regarding data entry.
