About the position

The Accounts Specialist (Payroll) at Washburn University is a part-time role focused on providing administrative support and high-level customer service within the Finance Office. This position is responsible for various clerical accounting duties, including payroll processing, maintaining financial records, and ensuring compliance with tax regulations. The role requires attention to detail and effective communication skills to assist both internal and external customers.

Responsibilities

  • Review timesheets for accuracy and initiate necessary actions for payroll processing.
  • Perform data entry for manual timesheets and supplemental pay requests.
  • Identify and research pay discrepancies, initiating corrections as needed.
  • Validate new hire onboarding documents and update payroll deductions accordingly.
  • Process garnishment, child support, tax levy, and bankruptcy payments.
  • Assist with preparing payroll tax returns and related documentation.
  • Provide general administrative support to the Finance Unit, including responding to inquiries and resolving payroll-related issues.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of experience in accounts payable, receivables, collections, payroll, or general accounting/bookkeeping.
  • Experience using computer-based accounting or payroll systems.
  • Effective customer service and communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.

Nice-to-haves

  • Successful completion of two or more college-level accounting courses.
  • Experience in preparation and reconciliation of federal and state withholding returns and year-end tax reports.
  • Experience in higher education collections and data analysis.
  • Skilled in using web-based integrated computer applications such as Ellucian Banner.
  • Understanding of laws and regulations related to tax withholdings.
