About the position

The Acquisitions Editor (AE) for Adult Titles at Pauline Books & Media (PBM) is responsible for collaborating with team members to achieve an annual goal of 25 releases, focusing on publications that express the Catholic Faith in a unique and engaging manner. The AE stays informed about current societal trends to address the needs of the audience effectively, working closely with authors and managing the publication process from manuscript acquisition to final production.

Responsibilities

  • Shepherd book manuscripts through the publication process, including editing and final checks.
  • Collaborate with the Editorial Manager and other AEs to develop editorial lines for PBM.
  • Actively acquire manuscripts and authors aligned with PBM's audience focus.
  • Review incoming proposals and manuscripts, directing the EA on rejections or requests for further material.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with authors, translators, and licensors.
  • Follow up on leads from the Editorial Manager and other team members.
  • Leverage repackaging opportunities of existing content.
  • Meet weekly with the Editorial Manager to review new projects and updates.
  • Prepare and present viable projects at editorial meetings.
  • Track projects through established processes and maintain project documentation.
  • Work with authors to complete manuscripts for Developmental Editor review.
  • Consult with experts to ensure fidelity to Church teaching and appropriate tone.
  • Seek forewords and confirm necessary permissions with the EA.
  • Provide initial design suggestions to the Design Department.
  • Notify authors of book titles and confirm details with the EA.
  • Review manuscripts before copyediting and complete project specifications.
  • Meet with Marketing to hand off authors at the appropriate time.
  • Present new titles to the sales team and contribute to marketing efforts.
  • Attend publishing trade shows and church gatherings as a representative of PBM.
  • Stay informed about current events in the Church and publishing trends.
  • Propose new ways to improve the quality and distribution of PBM materials.

Requirements

  • Studies in English, writing, communications, theology, or related fields.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Catholic faith.
  • Experience in church ministry or apostolate.
  • Experience in book editing and/or traditional publishing.
  • Knowledge of current trends in society and audience needs.
  • Excellent writing skills and command of the English language.
  • Teamwork and appropriate communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Confident use of Office 365 (Word, Excel, Teams, Sharepoint).
