About the position

The Actuarial Analyst at Wellmark plays a crucial role in providing analysis and recommendations for assigned market segments. This position involves delivering accurate and timely information regarding rates, trends, and rating factors to support various internal stakeholders, including Underwriting and Product Development. The ideal candidate will possess strong problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate complex information clearly.

Responsibilities

  • Provide analysis and recommendations for assigned market segment(s) to achieve corporate profitability objectives.
  • Deliver accurate and timely information regarding rates, trends, rating factors, and formulas to support internal stakeholders.
  • Conduct comprehensive data analysis of health care trends and financial measures, providing summary conclusions as directed.
  • Support statutory rate filings by compiling data, completing experience studies, and forecasting results.
  • Provide information for financial reporting, including reserves and annual statement exhibits.
  • Familiarize with various regulatory requirements relevant to the role.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation related to standard operating procedures and special projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Actuarial Science or related field, or direct and applicable work experience.
  • Previous experience in a finance-related role, internship, or completed coursework in finance.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as SAS, VBA, R, SQL, or Python.
  • Ability to apply statistical and predictive modeling methodologies to advanced analytical problems.
  • Experience in developing predictive models to solve business problems and effectively communicate results.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Microsoft Excel, and strong understanding of databases and data extraction.
  • Proven ability to work in a deadline-driven, detail-oriented, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present to business or technical partners.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Actuarial Science or a related field (preferred).
  • Passed one of the core exams recognized by the Society of Actuaries (e.g., P, FM).
  • Prior experience in an Actuarial role with knowledge of relevant regulations and risk management.
  • Previous experience in the health insurance industry.
