About the position

The Actuarial Analyst at Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies is responsible for the compilation, analysis, and synthesis of complex data sets to interpret operational and financial data effectively. This role involves working on multiple projects that require creativity, self-direction, and time management. The analyst will perform statistical analysis to support pricing, rate adequacy, reserve reviews, and peer company comparisons, while also making sound business decisions based on data-driven insights.

Responsibilities

  • Perform statistical analysis to develop and present reporting for pricing and rate adequacy, reserve review, and peer company comparison.
  • Proactively assess data and solicit necessary information to develop and interpret data-driven analysis.
  • Interpret and leverage discrepancies and/or variances; conduct appropriate research to gather data if not readily available.
  • Support reporting and recommendations with analytical insights and facilitate high-level problem solving.
  • Update and maintain actuarial factors for various databases.
  • Prepare and present ad-hoc reporting as directed by management.
  • Make sound business decisions and recommendations while considering model outputs, organizational goals, and qualitative and quantitative inputs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or Statistics from a four-year college or university.
  • Successful completion of one or more actuarial exams highly preferred.
  • Sound data analytical skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, MS-Access, MS-SQL).
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.
  • Ability to apply mathematical operations to tasks such as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
  • Able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations with limited standardization.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, governmental regulations, and financial statements.
