About the position

The Actuary position at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) involves providing technical actuarial guidance and support to the Office/Group Directors within the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The role focuses on developing actuarial estimation methodologies and models for projections and estimations, particularly in the context of Medicaid managed care.

Responsibilities

  • Leads major developmental efforts and critical projects, acting as a liaison with other CMS components and outside agencies.
  • Serves as a technical and actuarial expert, providing authoritative advisory services to senior level managers on Medicaid managed care issues.
  • Assumes responsibility for project planning, coordination of team efforts, and maintaining communication lines.
  • Reviews and analyzes current professional literature and insurance provider industry experience to detect trends impacting Medicaid managed care.
  • Provides technically authoritative advisory services to senior level managers.

Requirements

  • Must demonstrate at least one year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal government.
  • Experience in performing actuarial analysis to devise recommendations and evaluating actuarial projects.
  • Experience in developing processes to review actuarial results for health care programs.
  • Experience in communicating actuarial data and information to CMS components and senior leaders.
  • A bachelor's degree with courses in actuarial science, mathematics, relevant statistics, business, finance, economics, insurance, or computer science totaling at least 24 semester hours.
