About the position

The Actuary position at the U.S. Office of Workers' Compensation Programs (OWCP) involves serving as an actuarial expert and advisor to the agency's leadership team. The role is responsible for preparing actuarial estimates and analyses related to workers' compensation programs, analyzing complex actuarial problems, and conducting expert research to provide recommendations on data validity and analytical methodologies. The actuary will also participate in the development of software applications to support policy working groups and ensure the proper development and maintenance of actuarial liability models for OWCP's compensation funds.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as OWCP actuarial expert and advisor to leadership team.
  • Prepare actuarial estimates and analyses related to workers' compensation programs.
  • Analyze complex actuarial problems and issues concerning OWCP's benefits funds.
  • Conduct research to obtain up-to-date social, economic, and demographic data.
  • Analyze data for anomalies and provide expert advice on data validity and methodologies.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of software applications and tools.
  • Work with other technical experts to ensure actuarial models are reasonable and properly maintained.
  • Provide recommendations for OWCP's annual liability estimates.
  • Represent OWCP in discussions regarding the liability of its benefits funds.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in Statistics or related field.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Business, Finance, Economics, or Insurance.
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-13 level in the Federal Service.
  • Knowledge of actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, and financial risks.
