About the position

The University of Maryland Medical Center is seeking an experienced Nurse Practitioner to join the Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery team. This full-time inpatient role involves providing comprehensive care to patients undergoing head and neck surgeries, as well as those with general otolaryngology needs. The Nurse Practitioner will work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team to ensure high-quality patient care and safety, while also engaging in educational and leadership responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day organizational and clinical direction for the healthcare provider team in collaboration with the attending physician.
  • Perform comprehensive history and physical assessments for patients.
  • Order, obtain, and interpret diagnostic tests, establishing medical diagnoses based on findings.
  • Design, order, and document treatment plans, including medication prescriptions.
  • Initiate clinical protocols and evaluate care plans for timely interventions.
  • Perform invasive procedures as required.
  • Collaborate with attendings and residents on patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Communicate care plans with patients, families, and healthcare providers.
  • Educate patients and families on disease processes and treatment plans.
  • Facilitate patient flow and ensure timely discharges in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Participate in educational programs for healthcare team members and mentor students.
  • Coordinate nurse practitioner coverage and work towards achieving service-specific outcome targets.
  • Engage in quality assurance activities and develop clinical pathways.
  • Participate in research and contribute to nursing knowledge as a clinical trial sub-investigator.

Requirements

  • Master of Science Degree with completion of a Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Registered and currently recorded with the Maryland Board of Examiners of Nurses.
  • Certified as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Maryland.
  • Acute care certification preferred.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience as a Registered Nurse is required.
  • Previous (>1-year) Advanced Practice Provider (APP) experience required.
  • Experience in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery preferred.
  • CPR certification required; ACLS/BCLS as required for inpatient work.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote professionalism through involvement in professional organizations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Doctorally prepared nurse practitioners are expected to conduct nursing research as the principal investigator.
  • Demonstrated/documented effective interpersonal skills.
