About the position

The position functions as part of the dialysis healthcare team, providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsibilities include the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a clean working environment, and participating in quality enhancement programs. The role involves direct patient care, education, and monitoring, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing patient-specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures.
  • Welcome assigned patients and evaluate their wellbeing since the last treatment.
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and administer heparin as delegated.
  • Obtain pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders.
  • Monitor patients' response to dialysis therapy and document treatment parameters.
  • Discontinue dialysis treatment according to established procedures and evaluate patient prior to termination of venous access.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled on dialysis machines.
  • Document all relevant patient treatment information accurately and timely.
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff under the supervision of a nurse.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities and monitor patient care processes.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of the working environment, including disinfecting equipment and surfaces.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens for testing as required.
  • Assist in infection control audits and reinforce adherence to infection control practices.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate their care.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Valid PCT national certification or state-specific certification as defined by CMS.
  • At least two years of previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility preferred.
  • Successful completion of the organization's dialysis training program and CPR certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a healthcare setting with direct patient care responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of dialysis treatment processes and patient education techniques.
