About the position

The Adaptive Skills Instructor position at the Texas Workforce Commission focuses on providing educational and instructional support to individuals with disabilities, particularly those who are blind or visually impaired. The role involves planning, organizing, and conducting training to help students achieve independent living and vocational goals. The instructor will work under moderate supervision and will have opportunities for career advancement within the public vocational rehabilitation program.

Responsibilities

  • Teach and instruct students in skills necessary for achievement of independent living and work.
  • Coordinate appropriate services for students based on assessment results.
  • Assist in planning and delivering training plans to students and providing community resources.
  • Administer and score evaluations for training potential and program development.
  • Analyze evaluations for training potential and program development as Adaptive Skills Instructor IV.
  • Review and assess documentation, providing and coordinating vocational rehabilitative services.
  • Develop and evaluate community resources and provide information and referrals.
  • Plan course lesson plans, identify appropriate instructional strategies, and develop training aids and manuals.
  • Facilitate presentations to community groups concerning available services.
  • Notify staff of student progress and submit reports.
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of individual lesson plans.
  • Assist in job coordinating functions.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in human resources, organizational development, education, or a related field.
  • One year of full-time experience in training methods, techniques, and materials related to individual development, education, and training programs for TS II.
  • Two years of full-time experience for TS III.
  • Three years of full-time experience for TS IV.
  • Twelve semester hours of graduate study may substitute for each year of required experience; a doctorate degree satisfies minimum qualifications.
  • Willingness to participate in an extended blindfold-immersion training program.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in planning, teaching, and evaluating in a training program environment for adults with disabilities.
  • Experience in assessing clients' functional levels and planning individualized programs of instruction.
  • Knowledge of rehabilitative assessment techniques and tools.
  • Experience with kitchen activities such as cooking and cleaning safety techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience using braille.
