About the position

The Adaptive Sports Associate position at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital is designed for individuals passionate about promoting active and healthy lifestyles for people of all abilities through adaptive sports and recreational activities. The Spaulding Adaptive Sports Centers (SASC) provide a variety of land and water activities tailored to meet the needs of children and adults with disabilities. This role is crucial in ensuring that participants can engage in these activities safely and effectively, with the support of trained clinicians and adaptive sports professionals. The associate will work under the guidance of the SASC Cape Cod Coordinator and will be involved in a hybrid working model that includes on-site work in Cape Cod, remote tasks, and travel to various regional locations. Key responsibilities include assisting with the operational and programmatic aspects of adaptive sports programs, which encompass activities such as cycling, tennis, kayaking, outrigger canoeing, and paddle boarding. The associate will be responsible for reviewing participant intakes to assess equipment needs, communicating directly with clients for assessments, and ensuring that all equipment is in good working condition before and after each session. Additionally, the role involves loading and driving Spaulding vehicles and trailers to different programming locations, ensuring that all logistical aspects of the activities are managed efficiently. The associate will also uphold the organizational values of Innovation, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence in all interactions and tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Assist operationally and programmatically with regional adaptive sports programs, specifically cycling, tennis, kayaking, outrigger canoeing, and paddle boarding.
  • Review participant intakes to determine program/participant equipment needs for each session.
  • Communicate with clients directly as needed for assessments.
  • Ensure equipment is in working condition, set up prior to each programming session, and break down and pack post-session.
  • Load and drive Spaulding vehicles and trailers to various locations of programming.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health or Adaptive Sports related field including Recreation Therapy, Athletic Training, Adaptive Physical Education, Outdoor Education, Exercise Science/physiology, kinesiology.
  • Valid driver's license with no driving violations.
  • American Red Cross or American Heart Association First Aid, CPR, AED certification.
  • Knowledge of adaptive sport basics and ability to gain an understanding of the SASC programming.
  • Demonstrate an ability to attain knowledge of adaptive sports equipment.
  • Solid organizational skills, with the ability to collect waivers and programming fees as necessary.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work with participants of all ages and levels of abilities from pediatric to geriatric.

  • USA Hockey Coaching Credentials
  • Certified Disability Sport Specialist Certification Level I
  • Direct experience playing and coaching hockey/sled hockey
  • Personal or work experience in cycling and/or water sports
  • Highly developed communications and interpersonal skills, working with diverse populations.
