About the position

Washington Adventist University (WAU) is seeking candidates to expand its pool of adjunct faculty (part time) to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. Applications will be reviewed periodically based on student enrollment needs. The ESL program offers four levels of English courses: Basic, Intermediate I, Intermediate II, and Advanced. Each level has three subjects of 4 non-credit units. Available positions are contingent upon enrollment and instructional needs of the University. All initial interviews will be conducted in person and applicants must travel at their own expense.

Responsibilities

  • Teach English courses - Conversation, Grammar, Reading and Writing for learners whose first language is not English.
  • Prepare course outline and syllabus in accordance with guidelines, develop course and lesson plans, and engage in the selection of textbooks and other teaching aids necessary to the instruction of courses.
  • Evaluate student performance.
  • Work with students from other cultures and be sensitive to their learning needs.
  • Create a vibrant learning environment with a positive and welcoming attitude towards students.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Organize weekly co-curricular events for students: excursions, field trips, etc. in the DC area.

Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required.
  • One year of teaching or tutoring experience and ESL certification (TESOL or TEFL) is preferred.
