About the position

The Adjunct Instructor for Communication Studies at Contra Costa College is responsible for teaching courses such as Public Speaking and Forensics. This role emphasizes creating an inclusive learning environment that supports a diverse student population, particularly those from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. The instructor will engage with students, assess their progress, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement in instructional effectiveness.

Responsibilities

  • Providing instruction in accordance with established curriculum, course outlines, and class schedules.
  • Creating and maintaining an environment that emphasizes learning and encourages free discussion of ideas and critical thinking.
  • Evaluating student progress and grading student work.
  • Meeting with students outside of class to provide additional support.
  • Maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Keeping current knowledge in subject matter areas.
  • Fulfilling professional responsibilities as a part-time/temporary faculty member.
  • Maintaining accurate academic records.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication, or organizational communication; OR a Bachelor's degree in any of the above and a Master's in drama/theatre arts, mass communication, or English; OR the equivalent.
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff, and faculty.

  • Experience working with dual and concurrent enrollment students.
