About the position

The Adjunct Instructor for General Biology is a part-time, temporary position responsible for teaching courses in Biological Science at Contra Costa College. The instructor will provide classroom instruction, maintain academic records, and support students in their learning journey. This role emphasizes creating an engaging learning environment and fulfilling professional responsibilities as a faculty member.

Responsibilities

• Provide classroom instruction in accordance with approved course outlines.
• Inform students concerning course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance requirements.
• Maintain necessary attendance, scholastic, and personnel records, and submit them according to published guidelines.
• Prepare and grade classroom assignments and examinations, and inform students of their academic progress.
• Create and maintain an environment that emphasizes learning and encourages free discussion of ideas and critical thinking.
• Evaluate student progress concerning educational matters and grade student work.
• Meet with students outside of class to provide additional support.
• Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
• Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.
• Fulfill professional responsibilities of a part-time/temporary faculty member.

Requirements

• Master's in any biological science OR Bachelor's in any biological science AND Master's in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science OR the equivalent.
• Understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff, and faculty.

• Experience in teaching biological science classes at the community college level.
• Experience teaching in the General Biology laboratory including Biotechnology laboratory protocols.

• Experience with teaching using technology, including remote education platforms.
