The Director of Finance is a pivotal role within the school district, responsible for overseeing all financial operations and ensuring that the district's financial practices align with its educational mission. In addition to financial management, the Director will lead the finance team, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. This includes providing training and support to staff, promoting professional development, and ensuring that the team is equipped to handle the district's financial processes effectively. The Director will also engage with various stakeholders, communicating financial information clearly and serving as a key advisor to the superintendent and board of education on financial matters. Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee the district's annual budget, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and objectives.
  • Provide financial forecasts and long-term financial planning to support the district's sustainability and growth.
  • Monitor and report on budget performance, identifying variances and recommending corrective actions.
  • Manage all financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial reports for the superintendent, board of education, and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and other relevant financial standards.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to school finance.
  • Oversee audits and implement recommendations to improve financial controls and procedures.
  • Identify and manage financial risks, developing strategies to mitigate potential issues.
  • Oversee the allocation of financial resources to support instructional programs and operational needs.
  • Evaluate the financial impact of proposed initiatives and provide recommendations to district leadership.
  • Work with department heads and school principals to ensure efficient and effective use of resources.
  • Lead and develop the finance team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide training and support to staff on financial processes, policies, and best practices.
  • Promote professional growth and development opportunities for finance team members.
  • Communicate financial information clearly and effectively to various stakeholders, including the board of education, administrators, staff, and the community.
  • Collaborate with other departments to support district-wide initiatives and goals.
  • Serve as a key advisor to the superintendent and board on financial matters.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting with emphasis in Finance; CPA; MBA preferred.
  • A minimum of three years' experience working in a financial sector or three years experience working in schools with a focus on budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of public sector finance gained through an extensive number of years of directly related experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the development and management of budgets.
  • Demonstrated organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills required to achieve the goals of the position.

Nice-to-haves

  • Public school experience or public accounting experiences preferred.
