About the position

The Administrative Assistant for Research & Communications at the Park Center for Independent Media (PCIM) plays a crucial role in supporting the center's operations, communications, and event planning. This part-time position involves a variety of administrative tasks, including maintaining financial records, assisting in public communications, and coordinating events related to independent media. The role requires collaboration with the director and other faculty to enhance the center's outreach and impact in the field of independent journalism.

Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative support to the Park Center for Independent Media and its director.
  • Assist in the preparation of articles for the PCIM website and maintain financial records.
  • Coordinate public events, conferences, and guest speakers, including the annual Izzy Awards ceremony.
  • Serve as a liaison to campus offices and relevant outside organizations.
  • Aid in the assimilation of data, financials, and budgetary matters, and prepare reports related to PCIM.
  • Oversee the annual student internship program supported by PCIM.
  • Help maintain and update the PCIM website and manage social media outreach.
  • Engage in planning and executing symposia on independent media and media literacy.
  • Maintain an up-to-date database of PCIM contacts and subscriptions.
  • Perform public relations activities to enhance the Center's national profile.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, politics, or a related area is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of academic research and/or academic writing or related professional experience.
  • Familiarity with independent news media outlets in the United States.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to learn and follow Ithaca College systems and protocols necessary for the operation of PCIM.
  • Basic knowledge of website maintenance and database tools.
  • Financial record-keeping and budgetary oversight skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in planning and logistics for academic and public events.
  • Specific experience supporting independent journalism initiatives.
