About the position

The Administrative Law Judge/Assistant Administrative Law Judge (NY HELPS) position in Kings County involves conducting administrative hearings and making legal decisions regarding traffic violations and related cases. This role is essential for ensuring compliance with New York's Vehicle and Traffic Laws and other regulations, providing a critical service in public safety and legal adjudication.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct administrative hearings for adjudication of moving traffic violations and related cases.
  • Render decisions on violations of the Vehicle and Traffic Law and the Commissioner's Rules and Regulations.
  • Prepare cases for review by the Motor Vehicle's Appeals Board when necessary.
  • Adjudicate cases involving fatal accidents, persistent violators, and false statements on Motor Vehicle documents.
  • Evaluate violations of the Navigation Law and Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Laws.
  • Influence decisions based on the Zero Tolerance Program and new regulations regarding emission inspections.

Requirements

  • Admission to the NYS bar and two years of post-licensure professional legal experience for Administrative Law Judge.
  • 12 months as an Assistant Attorney 2 or admission to the NYS Bar with 12 months of satisfactory legal experience for Assistant Administrative Law Judge.
  • One year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55 B/C service allocated to a Grade 21 or higher for transfer eligibility.
