About the position

The Administrative Specialist for Benefits and Leaves plays a crucial role in supporting the Human Resources department by managing various leave of absence programs and administering insurance benefits for employees. This position is essential for ensuring compliance with employment laws and providing excellent customer service to staff regarding benefits and leaves.

Responsibilities

  • Administer leave of absence programs including family and medical leaves, non-medical leaves, contractual leaves, military leaves, and short- and long-term disability.
  • Collaborate with the Finance Department, Employee Relations, Risk and Safety, and disability insurance carriers to ensure accurate employee payments during leaves of absence.
  • Maintain compliance with leave of absence and employment laws such as FMLA, OFLA, and Paid Family Medical Leave Insurance.
  • Administer insurance benefits for all benefit-eligible employees, including enrolling new hires and processing changes and terminations.
  • Interpret and explain department and district policies, rules, and regulations to employees.
  • Respond to inquiries related to benefits and leaves via phone, email, and in-person.

Requirements

  • Three years of responsible, analytical, and technical program support experience.
  • Education equivalent to an associate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in business, public administration, education, or a related field.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of FMLA/OFLA/BOLI and Paid Leave Oregon.
  • Experience with reading and applying contract language.
  • Familiarity with HRIS systems and payroll entries.
  • Experience in insurance benefits administration.
